Oregon City Council Kills Ordinance to Require Permits for Protestors

When the City of Oregon stated they were looking at the creation of an ordinance requiring protestors to get a permit, many people expressed concerns of rights violations.  Several people came before the city council to express their views.

During the most recent Oregon City Council meeting, the topic came up for discussion again.  Mayor Ken Williams weighed in on the issue.  He said the ordinance was a way to make sure logistics are provided for the protestors and they should trust them.

He then stated he did not feel an ordinance was needed and he suggested postponing the ordinance, which would kill it.

Williams pointed out that the ACLU, Supreme Court and the State of Illinois do allow permits for this in a narrow way.

The council agreed with the mayor and postponed the ordinance.  This kills the matter.
