
The 35th Annual Emma Hubbs Tennis Classic kicked off on Monday morning at the Hubbs Courts in Dixon.
This year’s theme is “Down on the Farm” and the Opening Ceremony included a horse named Martin. The players and their families were able to get pictures with the horse.
Emma Hubbs daughter Suzie Hubbs said, “People were just amazed and the horse was so good. I thought the kids would be nervous because he was so big, but the kids wanted pictures with the horse. It was a lot of fun.
After the Opening Ceremony, the action began at the Hubbs Courts. In the Tiny Tots division, Issac Book finished in 1st place, while John Demmer took 2nd place. Anna Partington and Rachel Ravlin won the 13 Girls Doubles division while Madison Doby and Hailey Conderman finished in 2nd place. In the 15 Girls Doubles division, Meerna Elbzour and Jenna Mustapha finished in 1st place, while Ella Doby and Jessica Ardis finished in 2nd place. The final bracket of the day was the 18 Mixed Doubles division where Brooklyn Arjes and Joel Rhodes finished in 1st place, while Jenna Mustapha and Aron Rivera finished in 2nd place.
The Tennis Classic is named after Emma Hubbs who passed away in 2017 at the age of 88. Hubbs was a tennis coach in Dixon for nearly 70 years. Her daughter Suzie says, “Emma grew up in a house which would now be where the Dixon High School parking lot is at and she would look at the courts down by the river and say as a kid, ‘I wanna be a tennis player. I want to teach tennis.’ and she sure did.”
The Emma Hubbs Tennis Classic will continue on Tuesday.. The 6-8 year old division will be at 9am. The 15 Girls Singles division will be held at 1pm and the 18 Boys Singles division will begin at 5pm.
