
On June 8, 2025 at 2:11AM the Sterling Police Department was dispatched to a hit and run accident at the intersection of West 19th Street and Oak Grove Avenue. A black SUV was westbound on West 19th Street and failed to stop at the stop sign at Oak Grove Avenue.
The SUV continued westbound across Oak Grove Avenue leaving the roadway and striking a ComEd utility pole. The utility pole broke causing the lines to sag and touch a street sign. The electricity continued through the sign into the ground causing a small grass fire.
The driver of the SUV was not in the vehicle and had fled the scene when officers arrived. There is no evidence of major injury at this time. ComEd arrived on scene and had to cut off power to approximately 60 homes in the area to repair the pole.
The Sterling Fire Department, CGH Ambulance and ComEd assisted the Sterling Police on scene.
